About the Author: Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis (Balfour) Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of English literature. He was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov.

Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson's popularity and allow him a place in the Western canon.

Showcasing some of Robert Louis Stevenson’s interesting, lesser-known writing, this collection is made up of two stories that present different views of the author. In The Beach of Falesá,” Stevenson illustrates a seemingly idyllic South Seas island civilization that has been disrupted by traders and missionaries, marking a significant shift in his writing from romanticism to realism with his authentic portrayal of the relationships between the natives and settlers. The second story, The Misadventures of John Nicholson” is more autobiographical, chronicling the life of a well-intentioned Scottish man who falls into mishap after mishap, disappointing his ethical father. From the firm structure of island society to the tragic comedies of family relations, the themes Stevenson explores in these two stories both fall in line with those in his famous body of work and expand upon them.
