In October 1937, Dominican General Trujillo attempts to ethnically cleanse his provinces by brutally killing the black Haitians living there. In the small town ElÃas Piña, mulattos, blacks, and whites all speak their own racially mixed tongue of Spanish and French. When Trujillo decides to use correct pronunciation of the word "perejil" (Spanish for parsley) as a litmus test for his slaughter, mulatto Dominican Pedro must teach Adèle, his black Haitian lover, to wrap her tongue around the fatal word.
