Manila Bay: A Sailor's Story tells the tale of star-crossed lovers Jake, a young sailor, and Rosie, a Filipino bar girl. Set in the Philippine Islands in the early 1950s, it contains sex, violence, rape, theft, and murder. Written by the veteran who lived it, this fictional account introduces Jake Becker, an 18-year-old Minnesota farm boy who enlists in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Jake is trained as a weather forecaster and sent to the naval base on Manila Bay. There and in Hong Kong, he beds an assortment of girls but falls in love with Rosie, a 26-year-old bar girl, and embraces a lifestyle completely at odds with his Christian upbringing.

When Jake is transferred into the armed forces police, he deals with brawling sailors, the theft of government property, and the murder of a friend. This coming-of-age story entertains with erotic tales along with doses of salty sailor humor.

Don Walker (a pseudonym) was a sailor in the U.S. Navy from 1952-56 and served at the naval bases depicted in this book. Manila Bay is based on his unpublished memoir of those days, written after his retirement from government service in the 1990s.
