When he escapes and is rescued by the Marines, he goes on active duty with the Marines. He is wounded in combat, saving two Marine casualties, and receives a medal later. On release from the hospital, he is transferred to an air squadron as flight surgeon and plays an important part in improving the squadron. His next duty is on a carrier in the Persian Gulf, again working with an underperforming squadron. Rex has antagonized an important officer and undergoes an investigation from Washington.
