The Dying Moon is a modern epistolary novel with e-mails and is narrated by many characters who are both protagonists and antagonists. The story is set around 2000 in different locations: Fairfield, Paris, and Massa. The events take place in the fall and winter; however, the characters always mention spring and summerait is a book about the seasons and how the seasons shape our personalities. Zaddick, the main protagonist, begins his story with doubt and sadness, writing to an old friend about a book that he will publish soon and about his feelingsaloneliness, homesickness, and a break-up with his girlfriend. Zaddick will find qualities that he personally lacks in his friendsastrength in Nietzo (student of letters and philosophy at Sorbonne) and courage in Nick (a classmate). However, he will remain a sad man in his failed relationship with Madeline and his potential future girlfriend Kate. In addition, his book is not successfulathat means he is a failure himself.
