About the Author: Oscar Wilde

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was an Irish playwright, poet and author of numerous short stories and one novel. Known for his biting wit, and a plentitude of aphorisms, he became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. Several of his plays continue to be widely performed, especially The Importance of Being Earnest.

As the result of a widely covered series of trials, Wilde suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years hard labour after being convicted of "gross indecency" with other men. After Wilde was released from prison he set sail for Dieppe by the night ferry. He never returned to Ireland or Britain, and died in poverty.

As a spokesman for aestheticism, Wilde tried his hand at various literary activities: he published a book of poems, lectured in the United States and Canada on the new "English Renaissance in Art" and then returned to London where he worked prolifically as a journalist. Known for his biting wit, flamboyant dress and glittering conversation, Wilde became one of the best-known personalities of his day. This is Oscar Wilde's long -- and remarkable -- essay on socialism. It's not what you'd think, if you know just a little of his biography. Wilde foresaw -- from his time, long before it'd been tried as a principle of governance -- that socialism was a mistaken approach; he saw the mistakes that'd come from it, the consequences that'd befall the world and people generally long before they'd been put in place as a system of governance. Most writers are best not listened to as wellsprings of political ideas -- but Wilde was onto something, and saw very clearly the fate that would befall us all.
