About the Author: Richard Baxter

Librarian Note: There is more than one author by this name in the Goodreads data base.

Richard Baxter was an English Puritan church leader, poet, hymn-writer, theologian, and controversialist. Dean Stanley called him "the chief of English Protestant Schoolmen". After some false starts, he made his reputation by his ministry at Kidderminster, and at around the same time began a long and prolific career as theological writer. After the Restoration he refused preferment, while retaining a non-separatist presbyterian approach, and became one of the most influential leaders of the nonconformists, spending time in prison.

Living and writing at a time of great religious and social upheaval in England, Richard Baxter was nonetheless known throughout the land as a man of peace, trying to help both sides during the English Civil War, and finding himself at odds with both at well. A true advocate of the Protestant Reformation, Baxter used The Reformed Pastor to encourage a life of transparency and responsibility for those called to holy orders. Still, his goal is not to lambast, but to inspire and provoke great insight for men of the cloth who seeks to serve their God and their congregration.
