This is a collection of memories that Shelly, a young girl growing up in Roselea Gap, shares with us. Roselea Gap is a lush, green valley adjacent to Penn Lee, Virginia. A place of beauty and no matter the direction you looked, there stood a beautiful green mountain blocking your view of everything but an umbrella of blue skies and fluffy clouds. The streets are lined with old timey street lights that look so pretty at Christmas. That is until one looks much closer, scratch the surface so to speak. Small towns look lovely on a postcard. Shelly gives us a different view of what it was like growing up in a small town. A different way of looking at the people and events that had to change and progress, therefore making Roselea Gap different for future generations. Her stories are a way to travel back to that time and the beautiful memories of a small girl growing up there. Little did Shelly know the people around her would someday be fodder for her stories. She still shudders when she remembers America Susie in "Milking Snakes," her love for Grannie in "Cassie Marie" never faded, her Uncle Dave will always be her fondest memory in "Blade" and then "City Bears" never fails to bring tears to her eyes. "Rainbows" most definitely is her mother's story, and what to say about "Lily Mae," a tragic comedy to say the least.
