By 1930 in southeastern B.C. the Depression is tightening it's grip. Since prohibition lingers in the U.S. rum runners in their big cars are regularly working this Border area known as Tobacco Plains.
Nineteen year old Eddy who owns a good horse and a bad rifle is always ready to help anyone in need - from lawman to lawbreaker. As the son of a known thief, bandit and killer Eddy is always suspect but insists the only murder he is guilty of is of the spoken word. Neither brave nor ambitious he suddenly finds himself the last line of defence between an armed madman and his intended victims.
Also playing an important role is, Ruff, a dryland farmer who cannot do anything right but always deserves an 'E' for effort. His rifle is a good one but he has no horse and is too honest for his own good. One more failure may push him over a brink that even he is afraid of. He has an ex-wife, (coming on the train) a free spirited second wife (who will not share the house) and, as Eddy has noticed, a pretty daughter. Her boyfriend owns one of those big and quiet, powerful cars. She has a true gambler's instinct and no intention of riding off into the sunset with Eddy but he looks useful otherwise.
