Andy Desjardins is a sixteen-year-old elite mountain climber who is trying to become the youngest American to summit Mt. Everest. After an accident high on the mountain, Andy suffers a severe case of frostbite. As a result, nine of his toes must be amputated, and his nose and upper lip must be reconstructed. In order to deal with his new handicap, Andy begins counseling with Dr. Sok, an Asian-American psychiatrist who uses Zen Buddhist philosophies to teach Andy about mindfulness, attachment, and the Law of Impermanence; in the end, Andy wakes up and begins to see the world as it truly is, not the way he wants it to be.
