Growing up and leaving the farmlands in the foothills of North Carolina to go to war, young Johnny Odell distinguishes himself in horror-filled air battles over Germany and Korea. Death, heartaches, and sorrow take their toll on Johnny. Soon after the war is over, Johnny becomes a U.S. Marshal, fighting and arresting moonshiners in North Carolina and the Tennessee mountains. He continues chasing drug dealers and high rollers on the Mississippi river boats and up the Louisiana bayous, where he kills and cuts open an alligator, taking a dead infant from the gatoras stomach. After surviving two wars, fighting moonshiners and drug dealers, Johnny returns home to find his ailing mother on her deathbed. Life, Johnny, yes, life has an end.
