The Cyprus crises of 1963-1964, 1967, and 1974 bedeviled the United States and various European entities. Two American presidents, Lyndon Baines Johnson and Richard Nixon, dealt with Cyprus. The Cold War conflict was ideal for Russia to meddle in. Archbishop Makarios invited Premier Nikita Khrushchev in, since he tolerated AKEL, the local Cypriote communist party. The Cyprus conflicts involved the human element in the form of Byzantine intrigues, assassinations, state-sponsored terrorism, failed assassinations, and coups daA(c)tat. Militias combed the Cypriote countryside, while Greek and Turkish Cypriote defensive organizations were created to protect their kinsmen. Always in the foreground, Makarios retained enormous influence in any brokered peace plans. Makariosa statesmanship insured that Cyprus remained independent, as he played off Russia against the United States and maintained a non-aligned policy. After rejecting NATO arbitration, Makarios invited in the United Nations and its UNFICYP peacekeeping force, which remains in Cyprus to this day.
