About the Author: Valerie Nieman

My second poetry collection, Hotel Worthy, debuts in March from Press 53, which also published my collection Wake Wake Wake.
My first novel, Neena Gathering, returned to life after 25 years out of print, brought back as a classic in the post-apocalyptic genre thanks to the folks at Permuted Press.
Blood Clay, my third novel, is story about the search for home in the New South. It won the Eric Hoffer Award in General Fiction and was a finalist for the John Gardner Book Award.
I'm also the author of a Rust Belt novel, Survivors, and a collection of short fiction, Fidelities, set in rural areas from the Alleghenies to the North Carolina Piedmont.
Awards include a poetry fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, a North Carolina Arts Council fellowship, the 1998 and 2002 Elizabeth Simpson Smith prizes for the best short story by a writer in the Carolinas and awards in poetry including the Nazim Hikmet, Byron Herbert Reece, and Greg Grummer Prizes.
I am the poetry editor of Prime Number Magazine, and was a founding editor of Kestrel: A Journal of Literature and Art in the New World.
Born in New York State, I graduated from West Virginia University and worked as a newspaper reporter and editor for more than a quarter-century. I completed an M.F.A. in creative writing at Queens University of Charlotte in 2004, and joined the faculty of North Carolina A&T State University, where I teach writing.
