This novel is a story about three people who were abandoned political refugees upon a small island in the Persian Gulf area named Razdat. Itas an extremely inhospitable environment, and the three are continuously taxed not only trying to stay alive, but also protecting themselves from their own deadly fears and fanaticisms. In essence itas also a classic clash between the Western ethic that hope will never die, and Eastern fatalism that deems whatever happens will happen regardless of our input. Itas also an affirmation of life amidst a sea of despair and celebrates some aspects of a historically rich Near Eastern culture.
